The in-person “Leadership Essentials Course in Global Health,” hosted by the Irish Global Health Network in Trinity College Dublin over five days in August, is dedicated to equipping participants with practical skills for leading global health programmes, particularly in resource-limited settings.

This intensive programme covers tailored key topics relevant to global health development, research, and humanitarian response, providing participants with technical expertise in project planning and management.

Participants will learn from experienced professionals in health, academia, and NGOs, gaining insights into leadership, budget management, cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and collaboration in global health settings.

The programme will prepare participants for NGO environments, emphasizing management in humanitarian emergency response, research, global health and international development projects.

Practical sessions will be varied across a range of disciplines and include in-depth analytics, evaluation of digital interventions and sustainability in public health projects. Participants will engage in hands-on training through real-world case studies and interactive sessions, honing practical leadership skills.

A selection panel consisting of members from the IGHN educational steering committee will independently review applications and choose successful candidates by May 20th. Notification of awards will be sent to successful awardees during the week of May 20th.

A further five-day course in Global Health Leadership Essentials may be planned for a later date in 2024. Once we have reached capacity, a waiting list will be put in place on our Eventbrite page.

Course Adminstrator: Dr. Sadhbh Lee is an obstetrics and gynaecology doctor with a passion for equity, education and the environment. She is a founding member of Irish Doctors for the Environment, where her work has focused mainly on integrating planetary health into medical curricula. She has worked as an obstetrician in Ireland, Uganda and Afghanistan, and is an advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights of women around the world. Outside of work, she loves dancing, scuba-diving and being by the sea.

Course Outline:

From foundational principles to practical applications and partnership strategies, each day offers the opportunity to expand your understanding and expertise in global health development, research and planning. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, you’ll develop cultural competency, hone project management skills, and build technical expertise.

Day 1: Global Health Fundamentals, including Community Empowerment, Resilient Health Systems, and Leadership Representation.

Day 2: Migration, Non-Communicable Diseases, and HIV/AIDS, with a special focus on global perspectives.

Day 3: Practical Analysis and Evaluation of Global Health Programmes, covering Population Health Analysis, Digital Interventions, and Mental Health Initiatives.

Day 4: Sustainability in Global Health through Community-Centric Approaches, Planetary Health, and One Health Approach.

Day 5: Practical Skills and Partnership Strategies, including Health Volunteerism, Partnership Development, and Transitioning to Sustainable Partnerships.

Letter of invitation and visa to Ireland

Applicants requiring an official Letter of Invitation can request it via email from Gabriel Oke in the IGHN secretariat on [email protected]. Invitation letters will be issued to applicants who have completed full payment of their registration fees and secured their spot. Proof of payment and registration must be emailed to Gabriel for processing. The Letter of Invitation does not financially obligate the IGHN in any way. All expenses incurred in relation to the summer school are the sole responsibility of the attendee.

It is the sole responsibility of the attendee to take care of their visa requirements. Attendees who require an entry visa must allow sufficient time for the application procedure. They should contact the nearest embassy or consulate to determine the appropriate timing for their visa applications. It is recommended to apply for a visa at least 3 months in advance of the summer school.

If your visa is not granted in time for you to attend the summer school and you have paid the registration fee in full, the registration fee minus a handling fee of EUR 100.00 will be refunded no later than 14 days after the summer school. You will receive this refund if the visa was applied for in time, and proof of this, together with an official notice from the embassy confirming that a visa could not be granted, is forwarded to the IGHN secretariat.
