General Practice and Global Health: Enabling Physician Involvement by Strengthening the Doctor-Patient Relationship

The General Practice Society, in collaboration with the Irish Global Health Student Outreach Team, is pleased to host an expert panel discussion on the pathways and roles of general practitioners in global health.
The event will provide early career trainees the opportunity to learn about the ways to become involved in global health as well as offer practical advice on how to engage with patients from diverse backgrounds. The event will equip trainees with increased cultural competency that will ultimately strengthen the patient-doctor relationship at home and abroad.
Keynote Speaker
Dr Helen Kelly is an applied linguist and educationalist, specialising in health professions education. Helen is lecturer in communications at RCSI Dublin with an emphasis on medical / health science education in multicultural contexts. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, she has over 20 years’ experience in education, lecturing, education research & assessment. Helen worked for 10 years in the post of Lecturer in communications in the undergraduate medical school at RCSI with responsibility for leading in the design, co-ordination & implementation of communication skills modules for RCSI’s international student body. She joined the Health Professions Education Centre at RCSI in 2020, bringing her background in the education of overseas graduates to her current work with HPEC. Her current research interests include; curricula planning and design for international learners in higher education, learner autonomy (independence) in L2 assessment pedagogy, communication in clinical/ healthcare education contexts, multicultural medicine/ health sciences, intercultural competence in emergency care settings, intercultural communication education & training, academic integrity and professionalism in medical education. Helen has a strong pedagogical background, all her work to date reflects her background in education theory, frameworks and research.
