Leaving no one behind: Equitable access to surgery in rural Africa in the SDG3 era
Hosted by IGHN and SURG-Africa/RCSI
Date: 25th May 2021
Time: 13:00-14:00 Irish/UK time
“All roads should lead to universal health coverage”, which is SDG3. Access to safe, timely and effective surgical services is critical to achieving this goal. Yet one-third of the global disease burden requires surgical intervention and 18 million people die from surgically treatable conditions annually.
Rural populations in Africa are the most deprived and worst affected. The response lies in training and supervising district hospital teams comprising surgery, anaesthesia and nursing providers.
This webinar will bring together African and international experts, who have developed and tested feasible and affordable strategies for delivering essential surgical care to district and rural populations in three African countries. The webinar panel wishes to respond to questions and dialogue with global health practitioners around how to make these strategies more widely available.
Speakers:
Tiya Kapalamula: Paediatric surgeon, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi
Karima Khalid: Anaesthesiologist, Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute, Tanzania
Judith Munthali: Chief Nursing Officer, University Teaching Hospital Lusaka, Zambia
Chris Lavy: Orthopaedic Surgeon, Oxford University, member of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery
Jakub Gajewski: Programme Director for Research, Institute of Global Surgery RCSI
