Leadership Essentials in Global Health, Five-Day Summer Programme – 2025

The in-person “Leadership Essentials Course in Global Health,” hosted by the Irish Global Health Network in Trinity College Dublin over five days in July, is dedicated to equipping participants with practical skills for leading global health programmes, particularly in resource-limited settings.
This intensive programme covers tailored key topics relevant to global health development, research, and humanitarian response, providing participants with technical expertise in project planning and management.
Participants will learn from experienced professionals in health, academia, and NGOs, gaining insights into leadership, budget management, cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and collaboration in global health settings.
The programme will prepare participants for NGO environments, emphasizing management in humanitarian emergency response, research, global health and international development projects.
Practical sessions will be varied across a range of disciplines and include global mental health, governance in global healthcare, challenges in global surgery, human rights and social inclusion, planetary health and climate justice, one health, running NGOs. Participants will engage in hands-on training through real-world case studies and interactive sessions, honing practical leadership skills.

Course Adminstrator: Dr. Sadhbh Lee is an obstetrics and gynaecology doctor with a passion for equity, education and the environment. She is a founding member of Irish Doctors for the Environment, where her work has focused mainly on integrating planetary health into medical curricula. She has worked as an obstetrician in Ireland, Uganda and Afghanistan, and is an advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights of women around the world. Outside of work, she loves dancing, scuba-diving and being by the sea.
The summer programme has been endorsed by Board Chair of the Irish Global Health Network, Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf – Associate Professor in Public Health, Director of Public Health Programme, University of Birmingham, Dubai.
Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf, MBBS, PgCert, PgDip, FRSPH, FFPH, MRSTMH, IPMA®C, PhD is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Public Health Programme at the University of Birmingham Dubai. Dr Elmusharaf is a fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Royal College of Physicians UK. He is an accredited reviewer for the European Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation APHEA, a certified strategic project manager from the International Project Management Association IPMA, and a certified health professional educationalist from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland RCSI.
Dr Elmusharaf is medically trained and obtained his PhD in Public Health from the University of Galway, Ireland. Dr Elmusharaf is an advisor to the WHO and to UNDP on economics of non-communicable diseases. He is an associate editor at the BMC Public Health, BMC Health Services Research and International Health Journals. Dr Elmusharaf has more than 20 years of experience in academia, ministries of health, and international organizations in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
Course Outline:
From theoretical principles to practical applications, each day offers the opportunity to expand your understanding and expertise in global health development, research and planning. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, you’ll develop cultural competency, hone project management skills, and build technical expertise.
Day 1: Global Health Fundamentals, including Community Empowerment, Resilient Health Systems, and Leadership Representation.
Day 2: Migration, Non-Communicable Diseases, and HIV/AIDS, with a special focus on global perspectives.
Day 3: Practical Analysis and Evaluation of Global Health Programmes, covering Population Health Analysis, Digital Interventions, and Mental Health Initiatives.
Day 4: Sustainability in Global Health through Community-Centric Approaches, Planetary Health, and One Health Approach.
Day 5: Practical Skills and Partnership Strategies, including Health Volunteerism, Partnership Development, and Transitioning to Sustainable Partnerships.

Letter of invitation and visa to Ireland
Applicants requiring an official Letter of Invitation can request it via email from our training unit at: [email protected]. Invitation letters will be issued to applicants who have completed full payment of their registration fees and secured their spot. Proof of payment and registration must be emailed to our training email for processing. The Letter of Invitation does not financially obligate the IGHN in any way. All expenses incurred in relation to the summer school are the sole responsibility of the attendee.
It is the sole responsibility of the attendee to take care of their visa requirements. Attendees who require an entry visa must allow sufficient time for the application procedure. They should contact the nearest embassy or consulate to determine the appropriate timing for their visa applications. It is recommended to apply for a visa at least three months in advance of the summer school.
If your visa is not granted in time for you to attend the summer school and you have paid the registration fee in full, the registration fee minus a handling fee of EUR 100.00 will be refunded no later than 14 days after the summer school. You will receive this refund if the visa was applied for in time, and proof of this, together with an official notice from the embassy confirming that a visa could not be granted, is forwarded to the IGHN secretariat.
