At this year’s International Conference, as in previous years, the IFGH is facilitating the Irish Aid Annual Father Michael Kelly HIV/AIDS Event. This year is the 9th year of this event which was founded in 2006 to honour Fr. Michael’s remarkable work and tireless advocacy in the HIV and AIDS arena.
The annual event comprises presentations, lectures and discussions about HIV and AIDS in relating to each year’s event theme. This years theme is:
The negative role of stigma, prejudice and certain legal measures in the response to HIV and AIDS.
This event will feature Fr.Michael Kelly (via video), Noerine Kaleeba (Co-founder TASO, Uganda) and the IFGH’s own Nadine Ferris France. For those who may not have heard of Professor Father Michael Kelly (to give him his full title) before, he is originally from Tullamore (Co.Offaly) and has lived and worked for 50 years in Zambia. He has been a long-standing advocate for HIV and AIDS work, particularly in education, but also in areas such as HIV prevention and human rights in HIV and AIDS. In recognition of his work, Fr. Michael was awarded Honorary Degrees by University College Dublin in 2006 and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2012 and was honoured by the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign and Trade. Most recently, he received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad.
The event is free and open to the public as always and promises to be an engaging evening with speakers from varied backgrounds and experiences coming together to discuss a cross-cutting issue. We, at the IFGH, are excited to engage at this event and hope to see a wide and varied audience.
When: 17.45 – 19.00 5th Nov 2014
