World Encephalitis Day

February 22

Encephalitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the brain. It can result from various causes, including viral infections, bacterial infections, autoimmune disorders, and certain types of medications. The inflammation can lead to a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including fever, headache, altered consciousness, seizures, and in some cases, neurological deficits.

World Encephalitis Day, observed annually on February 22nd, is a global awareness campaign dedicated to educating the public about encephalitis, a serious medical condition characterised by inflammation of the brain. Organised by the Encephalitis Society and supported by various international partners, the day aims to raise awareness about the signs, symptoms, and impact of encephalitis, as well as highlight the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate medical care. Events and activities on World Encephalitis Day often include educational programs, fundraising efforts for research and support services, and personal stories shared by individuals affected by encephalitis. The overarching goal is to enhance understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage global collaboration in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of encephalitis.
