Josephine Nabaggala reports on her experience as a facilitator for the Donabate Transition Year Global Health Workshop, and as a member of the IFGH Student Representatives Group.

On April 17, 2012, the Irish Forum for Global Health and Trinity College Dublin’s Centre for Global Health held workshops on global health and development with approximately 85 transition year students (ages 15-17) at Donabate Community College. The following report has collated the responses to each evaluation question in order to identify themes around workshop strengths, weaknesses, and areas for future improvement.

The overall aim of this study is to identify issues impacting on the journey and experience of overseas students studying in a Western medical school. We aim to identify and clarify challenges facing cohorts of students at all stages of the programme and build on existing supportive mechanisms and to assist the College in further development of student welfare policies and provision of support. This study is being conducted in 3 phases and we would like to present the preliminary findings of Phase 1 – the impact on the newly arrived student.
